In short:

1. find a windows xp machine and stick the dongle in
2. open hyperterminal (for me this was com6 with speed 921600)
3. issue "AT+ZCDRUN=8". this removes the autorun mode of the virtual cd. you can use "AT+ZCDRUN=9" to get it back
4. remove the pin code question from the sim using a mobile phone
5. stick the modem in ubuntu and open network manager applet (right click on the applet and choose edit)
6. add "mobile broadband" and follow the instructions (i didn't have to make any adjustments, just selected my country and my ISP)

Ready for use. Just open the connection using the network applet.
